While it sounds like one is really "smoking" with 175 watts, compared to 80 watts, you will barely tell the difference! It is more psycological than real! Just for grins and giggles, it actually takes FOUR times the original power to make any difference in the received signal at the other end! 6 DB= one S-unit so if your 80 watts is being received at the other end at S-9, it won't even move the meter! To gain ONE S-unit you would have to be pushing 320 watts to move the needle up ONE more unit. You are effectively gaining.......................nothing. Well, maybe in our mind! :D Power isn't all it is cracked up to be! It just SOUNDS good!
Yeah, there is some companies that frown on having a seprate amp installed. There probably afraid that the amp won't get installed right and start having problems with the wiring.
and it really makes a guy mad when you walk on him with a cobra 29 ltd classic with roadking 56 and a 1pill box
when he just gave up his ghost to be able to afford the new radio and first day out the box he gets walked on
i feel bad
Well, in defence of built in amps, I have a Connex 4600 Turbo SWP and I can tell you that no cobra 29 with a 1 pill ever walked on me.
And more power will not make you louder but will push you signal further. On the highway most conversations are short because of the RF pressure on 19 and many of the drivers you are talking too are driving away from you at speed. With more power you can talk to them further but they will have to have enough power to get back to you.
If skip is your thing then get a seperate amp and go for it. If you are just talking local and mobile then the built in amp is a great option. I have radios both ways.
