OK so the new antenna come in today. Thanks JJD, John still had a 27" in stock whew so that was a big relief. for a while when I was still in Iraq I was worried they would be totally unavailable by the time I got back home. anyways now I need to get it fine tuned. I have a radio shack swr meter but I dont remember how exactly to use it since I havent touched the thing in over a year. What do I need to look for and what will dictate trimming the stinger?

if your swr is higher on 40 than 1. You need to trim. Trim from the bottom of the antenna whip if your antanna has a "ball" on the top.
If the lowest SWR reading occurs on channel 40, the antenna whip is to short
using the meter:
set the meter on "set"
key the mike, adjust meter with the control knob so the needle meets the CAL (calibrate) marking. While holding the mic still keyed
flip the meter's SWR switch. The needle should drop back and give you the swr reading.

Pretty much everything the yota167 said. Except that that the marks on the radio shack meter. And never move a switch while you are Keying. I dont think anyone key up there radio and change the channel.
Set the meter to Cal. Key your mic with your mic gain all the way down. Move the needle to set. Which sould be at the end of the red zone. Unkey. Move the switch to SWR. Rekey. There will be your swr reading.
Start with the wipe at the top. Check on channel 1 and then on 40. If the read of the swr's is higher on 40 than on 1. Move the wipe down about 1'' and check again. Keep going until your SWR's match on 1 and 40. Then your good to go.
When i tune. I look for a open field of a clear parking lot. These places with give you the best results.
Good luck and lets us know how it goes.
