Assuming the "radials" are long enough, it will load up and work as a base antenna...and it might work okay if it were up high. But any base CB antenna will outperform it.

I think that's the whole idea of a ground plane. The Wilson 1000 uses the vehicle as the ground plane. In order to use a mobile antenna....that's what you have to do...build a ground plane. I can't remember which sponsor....but I know one of them sells a ground plane specifically designed for turning a mobile antenna into a base. Browse their sites and you'll find it. You'd be better off making a wire dipole.....you can mount it anywhere, inside or out....or a regular base antenna. I'm using a wire dipole.....and believe this.......hanging from the ceiling fan in my room. :icon_e_surprised: ...and it gets out I know for a fact at least 10 miles as the crow flies. I'm sure I get out farther because mys sis told me I was hitting her in the red. The best thing is that I used old stuff I had lying around to build it with and I was only out the cost of the coax.
Sorry I got a bit off topic...but it felt relevant.

If that groundplane thingy works as it should, then it will make that mobile antenna work, be usable. That won't make it work as well as a larger 'base' antenna, but it ought to be at least usable. If you've got 'limits', and if that set up falls 'inside' those limits, then it's one option. There are other options. Find, then select the option that works out best for your situation. (Good 'trick' when you can do it with just one 'try'.)
