Hey guys; just joined in forum and getting into radios. Mounted a General Lee in my freightliner Cascadia yesterday. I'm using a predator 27" antenna mounted on a bird perch mirror mount. Used good coax(18') and had swr's set when radio installed. All is good with sound(send & receive) but still not getting out very far. And ideas?
Just thought I'd post an update......I'm currently running that Uniden 980 SSB I was talking about in my first post along with an RM Italy KL-203P with a K40 magnet mount antenna. The SWRs are around 1.2 couldn't be happier with that set up. Been using it for about 3 months now and have gotten really good reports on recv and trans. I'll soon be getting a SIrio 5000 or a Wilson 5000. I think for "getting out" more, I would suggest that you might want to consider a longer antenna. In my experience height is might! You might also try a linear amp but make sure your antenna and coax can take the wattage the amp will put out......73's

i took out the ashtray and simply slid in a radioshack unit, hooked to a base-loaded avanti on the roof.
i also run 10-40wt in it

Hey Arizona, does yours have the speaker on the bottom? Does it echo being confined in the ashtray compartment? I'm thinking of doing similar443 Arizona wrote:kept it clean,

Uniden 980ss, Firestik II using a galaxy mic and a TC-300 when I need a little boost. Also run a Galaxy 94hp sometimes, but that is a big, heavy radio and it usually is sitting in my ham shack being used as a base.
