Decision: Cobra 29 (good radio?)

#36460

Post by Choirboy »

I finally decided on a Cobra 29. Lots of them on eBay for $30-40. It's bigger than I wanted, so I'll probably have to velcro it to the dash of my Maxima 'cause it won't fit anywhere else  . Are there any variants to stay away from (ST, NW, CLASSIC, LTD, etc.)?

Also, I read somewhere that this radio will "swing" to 12 watts. What does this mean?

The pre-China 148GTLs either were bidded up beyond what I want to spend or looked like crap!

Thanks!

The older 29's like the GTL, LTD classics, pre china made, will swing to about 20 watts, newer ones will swing to 12 watts, what that means is when you key and talk into the mic, you modulation pushes the radio to swing watts, or PEP,,,they are all good radios, look at Cobra 25s or Uniden 68,,,,,,,,Uniden made Cobras for years, not now, Uniden radios today are built a little better,(20 watt final) but can be bought cheaper on eBay,,,if you are looking for a good small radio look at a Uniden Pro 510XL,,,they will tune up good and talk really big

I'm not sure how much they are, but I would talk to Mr. Radioactive about a mini magnum. They are small, talk really good, and you will get great support from Radioactive.

I have a cobra 29 NW WX ST that works great. It transmits pretty good. Has to be dialed in right though. It sounds great and is quiet loud. (Especailly when you have an ant 65watt amp hooked up haha With a good ol willy)
It is a great radio for the money though!
