What kind of radio? What is the noise level on your meter when monitoring? Does the radio have a clarifier or delta tune knob that is not centered?

Alignment problem? Is the radio new, used, hacked....?? If they are garbled, it is possible that theyu are on sideband or their own radios may be off frequency. I bet there is some folks in here that will elaborate on this a whole lot more than I can and hopfully get your radio receiving well again.... Good luck!

What kind of distance apart are you when you can't understand them, and they can understand you? Yards, blocks, miles?

You said the radio is about 4 months old. typically, problem like this is is apparent right out of the box. Was this something you noticed only recently and may have existed as a problem since the purchase?

If the radio worked well before and it was not hacked or zapped with access power at close range, then I am at a loss. Parts in radios ytake years to fail.... I an stabbing in the dark here but did you set the radio up with good SWR? was the radio dropped?

What you describe is usually an "out of the box" issue... Keep searching and I am sure the answer will surface...

There are more than one reason why you may not be hearing/understanding some one. One side of that coin is that they are just too weak to hear, and the other side is that they are too strong, believe that or not. The too weak is an easy one to understand. The too strong isn't. Very basically, it means the signals are so strong that they 'over-load' the receiver making it spew out all kinds of 'stuff' that doesn't sound anything like normal. It's 'sensitivity' has been greatly exceeded!
Typically, there are two solutions, get away from those close stations, or desensitize the receiver by turning down an 'RF-gain' control. Or, a quick-n-dirty method is to disconnect the antenna and see what happens. If things get better, then you've got a fair idea of what's happening, and will continue to happen. If there's still a lot of misunderstanding/distortion of what's being said, then you might have a problem with the radio. And since the radio isn't/wasn't new to start with, I won't even try to guess why it may be happening.
Good luck.
