The roof is the absolute best spot for performance but it is ugly. The deck lid is a nice compromise if it is a sedan. I used to drive tauri for company cars but I don't know what an 06 looks like. Wilson makes a good antenna in a trunk mount or you can simply use a magnet mount, either on the deck lid or roof, and wilson make the best magnet mount for that type of activity as well. Antenna efficiency will vary but generally, the taller the better. Wilson makes a "little wil" that is like 3 feet tall and their better one, that works much better, is about 60 inches tall. It has a base black covered coil and a steel stinger, and it is easy to remove. 60 inches may sound like a lot but it doesn't look as bad as 4 feet of fiberglass.
If appearance isn't important and performance is your goal, then you'll want to go to an open coil center loaded antenna for that next level of performance.

That antenna you described sounds like one of those things that are just a little too-good to be true, you know? That's just not a very typical price for a reasonably good antenna. I've never seen one so it could just be my skepticism showing too.
That 'MK174' mount looks to be typical, and probably just dandy for a 'not-large' antenna. If I were not comfortable with drilling holes in cars, I'd certainly consider it. As you've seen, a mag-mount can cause damage. I don't really see any difference between fixing scratched paint or filling a hole.
The only reason for 'dual' antennas is that they are directional. If you have a need for such, then have at it. If not, then it's only for 'looks' and just not worth the trouble as far as I'm concerned. You have to decide that for your self.
Good luck!

ty. the antenna i found on ebay. he has a website im not shure if im alowed to post links or not but if u want look at it u can im me. he also sells a few 25k viper antennas for 39.99. i dont think my little uniden would give a viper its justice. my fiancee says i may well invest in a monkey made antenna. the one big coil antenna is 5' 6' tall i think. i used to mount my anennas on my roof bar when i worked securty. its in storage at the moment in a difrent state.. maby oneday ill invest in a new uni bar a can clip oo o hold my antenna. like the FS Roof Bar Mount.

We have an '04 Sable (same thing as Taurus) and I run a Little Wil mounted on the truck lid. I have never had any problems with the paint getting scratched and I have been able to talk mobile to base at 10 miles and mobile to mobile at 5 both barefoot. It doesn't look tacky or stand out on the car, if anything it makes the car look like a detective's car since the car is black.

if you want a little stronger mobile setup then the trunk setup
install a puck mount with say a 22 inch shaft 10k
the coil has to be above the top of the car
install the puck as close to the rear of the trunk lid as possble
this will give you more gain toward the front
so if you like to shoot skip just point the car in that direction

What would be the 'best' way to go with your Taurus? A full sized 1/4 wave antenna in the middle of the roof. That's probably not going to be all that practical or desirable though, right? So, compromise and place an antenna in the most 'convenient' spot for you. Not much difference between hood or trunk mounting as far as performance is concerned. There is a difference between hood/trunk mounting and roof mounting, but it isn't all that much difference.
How much 'compromise' are we talking about? Beats me, just too many variables in that to make a good guess.
And then there's all the 'other' things seldom mentioned. Such as 'grounding'/bonding all the body panels to provide the most 'continuous' metal structure for that antenna to use as it's 'other half'. It can get to be so much 'fun'!
Good luck!

i know the dodge stratus i setup
22 inch shaft comp 10k on trunk with puck mount mounted as close to the rear as possible at 10 miles facing away he drops a 3 s-unit
he can turn around and then drop a 5 1/2 to 6
with the magmount 5000 he had on top the roof at 10 miles he would key a 3 1/2 both front and back drop off at the sides
and these tests were actually done hands on
