Anyone ever used a satellite dish as a ground plane?

Long story short....there's a broken satellite dish next to my hole. It's not real big.....maybe 4 feet by 2 feet or so.

I was not sure if I could use it as a ground plane for a mobile antenna? If so how big? Would it only be good for a 4 foot antenna? Or would possibly a 102 whip mounted on it?

Was thinking if so asking the company if I could have it, then use it on the roof of our home.

You could try it, but in theory the reflector would have to be at least a quarter wave or 9 feet. People have successfully run mag mount antenna on washing machines, removed car door, etc. I had thouth about using an old Primestar Dish and 102' inch whips to make a folded dipole just to make people curious about my redneck satellite CB. I am the type of guy who would plant flowers in old commodes, in the front yard.

I'm afraid a 'groundplane' has to have some relation to the wave length for the frequency you use it for. That dish just isn't gonna be big enough for 11 meters. Now, if it was one of the older 9 -10 foot dishs, it'd work. But being a 'dish', concave', you'd have to turn it over and use the back side though (convex). Otherwise it's be like putting that antenna down in a shallow 'hole'. The length of the antenna makes no difference really.
Now, if that dish has a radius of about 19" or more, you could probably use it on 2 meters real well. Not much help, huh?

DAYUM....and I have two sat dishes just collecting dust on the side of the house.

No Doc that helps alot, I'm going to ditch the idea. Was hoping it would work...would be a lot easier and cheaper than buying a home CB antenna.
