I would ground it to the mast....then to the rod.

If its on a tower or mast, to the bottom of mast or tower, as if its even necessary, if its in a tree, well either run a wire staight down to a good ground rod, or dont ground it at all, and unplug it when your done talking. grounds are tricky. If you dont understand how they work or what exactly they do, dont bother, cause if your wrong you'll actually do more wrong then good.

The last time my A-99 went up. I sandwitched a ground wire between the pole and the antenna. Then down to a 4 foot grount rod in a 1 foot deep salt bed.
It worked good.

That 'grounding' is only for safety, it doesn't affect the antenna's electrical abilities (unless something else ain't right). If it's mounted on a metal pole/mast/tower, why not use that metal pole/mast/tower as the 'ground' wire? Unless your separate 'ground' wire is really huge, it'll never carry the same amount of current as that pole/mast/tower will.
Safety grounding is never as simple as most people think, there's quite a bit more to it than meets the eye. I would suggest taking a look at the NEC for grounding (National Electrical Codes). It can tell you lots more than you'll find here, and is a very nice thing to go by as far as your local ordinances are concerned (which can get really 'sticky' at times).

Thanks for your advice. I just drug out a bunch of old -good equipment. I have a hand held and Silver Eagle d104. A 148 GTL and A President Grant that I'm trying to put back togeather and I'm getting a squeal and a to of RFI. I'll do some more with the Dosy and some equipment grounding.
Used to really sound good. Dosy doesn't show squeal.
