FM car antenna for CB?
well i tried searching for a topic, but FM isnt 3 letters so i cant use it in search,
so my question is,
can i hook up a CB to my cars AM/FM antenna? i do not plan to keep teh FM antenna attached cuz i never use it
and if i can use this antenna, what kinda distance am i looking to get? how can i attach it? (preferably freely and DIY-ly) and will it mess anything up?
i commute to school alot n have always wanted to talk to the people on the road with me, also alot of my friends already have CBs in their trucks and jeeps, any help would be most appreciated :3

There used to be adapters (miniature tuners) that would allow you to do that, but they were horribly inefficient. You probably can still buy AM/FM/CB antennas. The most popular ones were automatic or electric (up and down) versions. The only multitask antennas that worked were CB antennas with splitter that allowed you to receive am & fm with your cb antenna.
Splitters: Replace your am/fm antenna with a CB antenna and use this: [Please login or register to view this link]
Here is a good explaination of why you would start with a CB antenna: [Please login or register to view this link]
Here is an AM/FM/CB antenna with splitter. It used to work fairly well. Expect it to work o.k. in convoys, but that is about it. [Please login or register to view this link]

twek,
Can it be done? The 'quick-n-dirty' answer is yes. The longer answer is, yes, but don't bother, it really isn't worth it, and because there's no commercially available 'thingy' to convert a regular car antenna to a CB antenna, it's ain't cheap or easy.
There used to be a commercially available thingy that fit between an AM/FM antenna and a CB radio and it would 'work'. It never worked well, and there were enough complaints that it was finally taken off the market. Occasionally you run across someone trying to sell one, "New In The Box"! If they aren't trying to pay you to take it, and paying the shipping charges, just smile and walk away.
Best advice is to find you a mag-mount antenna.

Hi
Everything that needs to be said about the subject has been mentioned. I still have an AM/FM/CB antenna with the matcher new in the box. It is 20 years old. There is a reason why it is still new in the box unused. They do not work very well. It is a compromise between performance and practicality.
It was neither practical nor did it perform very well. I did install a few in the GM's that came with the Delco radio that was a AM/FM/CB/and cassette player all in one. Nothing was more annoying than to be listening to the radio and have the CB override the the music. It would not have been so bad, but the CB only came out of the right rear speaker.
Thank goodness they went out with Spats and the under the dash record player that ruined the 45 after about a 10 plays. I wish I still had that record player today. It played the record upside down and used a spring loaded needle to play the record. The needle cut a grove in the record, but it was an idea; just not a good one. Today if you can find one that still works you can get some bucks for it.
