ANTENNA MAST QUESTIONS
NEED TO KNOW WHAT TYPE OF MAST SHOULD I USE SUPPORT A SMALL BEAM. TOP RAIL IS BENDING WITH A M103 AND I NEED SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE RIGID. I'M ONLY GONNA BE AT THIS HOUSE ANOTHER YEAR SO I'M NOT SPENDING MONEY ON A TOWER. I NEED SOMETHING TO SUPPORT THE BEAM, SMALL ROTOR UP TO ABOUT 30' PLUS GUY WIRES.
If it were me, I'd buy 1 top section of tower, put it in the ground (just push it in the ground) and strap it to a eve of your house, and put a piece of pipe comnig out of it with a rotor plate.
If you're going 30 ft, you're gonna have to either have a push up pole or some sort of tower. Push up poles work OK, but are not the most sturdy creatures ever made. Like I just told WildRoot, tower sells locally here for $20 per 10 ft section. It's cheaper to buy the tower than it is to buy the pipe...plus if you put the rotor IN the tower section, it makes it much stronger. On some rotors, it doubles their strength.

How many sections can you get for that price, and what size tower is it?

Doc, probably as much as I want. I have 40 ft setup on my house, but I don't need anymore than that. I have a nice CushCraft A4S in the air with a CushCraft A24010S on top of it.'Doc wrote:How many sections can you get for that price, and what size tower is it?

I've often thought about buying up all this bulk antenna, and just sitting on it, or selling it online. Tower in the parts is plentiful.
Does anyone know if the old TV antennas are still going to be used after the digital conversion? I have no clue b/c I have digital cable. If they are not going to be used, I can probably get semi loads for free, or close to free.
linx,
I'm sure that some of the ol'style "antenna on'a stick" will be used for DTV, probably about as many as are still used instead of cable now. And considering the misinformation that's fairly common about DTV, there will be many who will wish they were gone after they change to cable/wireless/etc. I know that there are one or two locally that I wish would decide to get rid of their towers, one I'd really like to have. No idea how I'd ever get the thing down (very tall), or if it would even be worth having (been there about 40 years. So what, I'd still like to have it in my backyard!). If I were 20 years younger, didn't have anything to do, and had a place to store the things, I'd invest a little money in them. But not my life savings by any means.
I'm assuming the towers you're talking about are all the typical aluminum TV types? If you had any Rohn for that price (and if you'd deliver), I'd buy all that you had. Got a feeling I don't need to hold my breath on that one though... RATS!

It's all Rohn type. I don't know anyone here that has aluminum tower.
That's the problem, is I can't deliver...lol. Way too busy of a life at this point in time.
That's a fairly common price around here. I have a good friend that sells a lot of tower and antennas and that's what he charges as well. The most I've seen is $25 per section. We're not talking all rusted up/beat up/bent tower either.

A friend gave me 2 sections and I bought a center section and top section. I got the rotor plate for free.
Last spring, I bought a 40 ft tower, a Moonraker 4, rotor plate, and 3 runs of RG-213U cable that was 1 year old for $200. I put the Moonraker on my tower for half a year or so, took it down, sold it for $250, sold the tower for $80 ($20 per section) and kept the coax.
Right now, I know of around 10 towers with no antennas, 6 towers with antennas, and 2 crank up towers with PDL-2's. All NOT in use. All of which I'm sure I can get for close to nothing and take down myself. When I see a tower with no antenna, I just stop and ask. I know where 3 sets of Moonraker 4's are, with no rotors, with the antennas dropped all the way down to the tip of the top section. You know those aren't in use.
I'm no tower climber...but you can do a lot with some high quality rope and a sawzall. I can load up on tower anytime I want to get it. It's more of a hobby than anything. I can't stop looking around for people's towers. I have a keen eye for it. BushHog (member here) rides with me all the time, and I'm constantly "hey, look at that tower" or "hey, there's one not in use".
Anyway, I think we did a good job of getting this thread off topic
