You don't need a big antenna to "shoot skip." A Wilson 1000 will work fine.

A wilson 1000 would probably be your best bet they are really good antennas and easy to tune. They can be a little expensive but they are worth it.
You're looking at at least two different operating 'styles'. One envolves driving around in a vehicle, the other sitting still someplace. As far as the driving around thingy goes, you're probably as well off with your present antenna as any, all things considered. When you're sitting still, that's a whole new ball game, sort of. Just depends on how much trouble you're willing to go to. What's to prevent you from taking along a base antenna of some kind? Which one? Beats me, what'cha got, or are willing to get? And how much trouble are you willing to go to to use it? Will it fit, or can you take it apart to make it fit in your car? More of that 'trouble', right? Are there any mobile antennas that are as 'good' as a base antenna for skip? Not really. Some that are close, but considering the problems associated with any mobile antenna, not REAL close, sort of. You steps up to the bar, lays down your money and names your poison. You gotta drink it, so make it something you can stand to drink. Right?
