Problem with reception

Hey guy's how's it going?
So I'm having problems with reception. I have a Uniden Bearcat PRO and a simple Radio Shack mag mount antenna on the trunk deck. Nothing special but can't put a lot of money into this particular setup being which car it's in (Work). I'm reading around 1.3 on the SWR for channels 1,19, and 1.5 for 40. I seem to be getting out fine because one of the guys I'm talking to says I'm loud and clear to him from about a 2 miles away. The problem is I can only hear him when he's about .25 mile away. I can't hear anybody on the interstate either. If I have my squelch turned all the way down it doesn't help. Is there any reason I would get a good transmission but not reception. I keep looking to find the answer but everybody says to check the SWR which mine seems to be good. I know I should probably get a better antenna but why would it transmit ok but receive so poorly.

If the antenna is working anything close to average, you should hear as well as be heard. If you are being heard okay, but are not hearing okay, then I would suspect something wrong/not right with the receiver. What? I have no idea. You could try substituting a different radio (if you have access to one), see if it hears better. Still wouldn't tell you -what- was wrong, only that there is/isn't something wrong. Make sure of how you have the squelch and volume set. Are you the first owner, and/or have you done any modifications to the radio? Any other odd behavior? I'm running out of ideas...

Do you got your Delta tune in the 12 o-clock posititon. RF gain all the way right. Sam with Mic gain. Squalch all the way left. See if thats will straight it out.

I have never been a believer in mag mounts. Or radio shack antennas for that sort. I just dont think the get a good enough ground. Try running a external ground wire to the ground side of the antenna to the frame. See if that makes anything better.

If all that don't work Im pretty sure what doc said is correct. You will need to take it to a shop and have it looked at.

i agree, check the ground or run a wire. you my think the swr is ok but you might be getting a false reading.that does happin, speacilly with mag mounts.if that dont work see if you can try someone elses radio in the car, or take the radio to the shop. rat shack mag mounts r a little funny sometimes.. good luck..ny221 ch 6 super bowl :ugeek:
