Post by Twink »

does anyone have any ideas as to how i could set up some sort of base antenna at my apartment, where they don't allow anything on the roof? i was thinking of building a large pole and running it along the side of the apartment, then i could just unscrew the antenna when im done...

i don't know... any suggestions? (besides get a house)

Howdy,

If your interested in a dipole, Radiowavz makes a cb 11 meter dipole in the 1.6kw and a 5kw rating. There's some reviews floating out there and I think you'll be pleased with the flat standing wave ratios whether you set it up as an inverted V or horizontal for some potential DX. It is the ultimate in stealth antenna and the radiowavz in particuliar holds up against the worst of weather conditions.

Building your own wire dipole is easy.......all it takes is a couple of pieces of stranded copper wire, a coax connector and a couple of insulators. After I get off of work, I can tell you how I made mine if you want. It's got a 1.1:1 SWR and I get out 10 miles.....with it mounted in the house. Jut say the word if you want it posted.

There are three 'problems' with using an antenna inside rather than outside. The first is figuring out how to make the thing 'fit'. Several ways of doing that, just pick the one you like best, sort of. The second 'problem' is that an inside antenna just isn't going to be as good as an outside one. No way around that, but if it's a choice of having an antenna or not having an antenna, you can probably put up with a lot of that 'not good' thingy. The third 'problem' is that since it's going to be so close to the electrical stuff in you apartment (and in your neighbor's!), you will have interference problems. That's probably the one thing that will cause the most grief of those three 'problems'.
Having said that. There are several ways of getting something to use as an antenna. That dipole idea isn't bad. A dipole can be 'configured' in a lot of different ways, sort of bent to fit. They can be oriented vertically or horizontally, or anything in between.
Sticking an antenna out a window is another solution. Not quite as 'stealthy' as others, but it certainly will work. That 'third' problem will still be a problem, just not far enough away from stuff not to be. Large number of possibilities with that 'out the window' thingy.
The absolute bestest thing is to either move or buy the @#$ building! Yeah, I know, but still the 'bestest' thing.

If you buy the building, would you adopt me?? ... Daddy?

The radiowavz dipole antennas work very well or you can make one yourself. They really are the best solution for an apartment and put out less TVI than most other antennas.

Here's some info on running a dipole antenna - [Please login or register to view this link]
