What antenna should I get

#217078

Post by kralac »

I am pretty new to the whole CB sceen and am wanting to get a decent antenna that isn't very expensive. I have a 92' Jeep Cherokee and cant decide between a mag mount or a standard mount/antenna. I am using a Uniden CB. Any help would be appreciated.

The questions you need to ask yourself are: Is this going to be permanent or are you going to sell the vehicle or change your mind later?
How tall you want to be? How much money are you willing to part way with?
And how do the other members rate the antenna's in your price range.

If you want the best cheaper( not the cheapest, because you get what you pay for) and height is not problem, then the 102" whip or 108" ( whatever size it is...) is the best relatively cheap antenna compared to 10K's, monkey mades, etc.

I personally run a 5 foot 5 inch FRANCIS antenna and love it. But I am waiting for a predator 10K to arrive via UPS any moment....
The francis is super cheap, less than 20 dollars. They are NOT rated for high power i.e. Amps. but I have run a two pill into one with no problems, but its not recommended.

How tall it is isnt a issue, I live in the country, and it doesnt sit in a garage. I would like to keep my budget in the 30-55 dollar range. As far as I know I dont ever plan on getting rid of my jeep, its my current daily driver but after that itll be my 4x4 off road toy.

One of our sponsor's for this site offer's 5'5" francis for 14.95 for one and 13.95 a piece for two.

Check out the sponsor links at the bottom for more prices and products.

If height is not a problem then the TALLER the BETTER. so look around for height and price.

tree tall is right, 102" is the best antenna. I think they run around 20-30 dollars, but it is recommended to get the spring (another 20) and the ball mount( another 20 or so.)

These are rough estimates but close.

I think I'm gonna go with a 102, I checked and I can get one at a local place called Kodiaks for 22 bucks, and Ill grab a spring to, but I'm gonna get a mount for the roof of my Jeep, since its probably the best ground plane. I am wondering if I could get a mount that would attach to my cargo bars, or does it have to be attached to my roof itself for grounding purposes?

Good choice on the 102" and spring. As for mounting location, the guru's say the roof. but that usually means making a hole...

Just make sure to get a good spring. Real stiff. I take down my 10K and run a whip when Im in the woods. I am higher with the 102 on my 10K mount so it does hit more than if I just had it mounted to the bed. But a good stiff spring I think is a must.
Let's do some WATTS!

102 whip with a good 6 in spring. But if you belong to a jeep club or go to ORV parks whips arent aloud.

it depends on whether or not the rail is metal or not. if its metal you can more than likely attach the mount to it.

Watchdawg...to get the best SWRs across the band, the middle of the roof would be the G spot.

Kralac...I have a 96 Cherokee and have mine on a ball mount on the right side back by the tail light, right where the pocket is inside. I got ears, that's fer sure, but also contacting DRDX when i get the money to get a custom mag mount made  .

the smokeeaters back quiet

What He Said. And they are tunable. Got mine on a few weeks ago. Tuned it and jumped 2 lb on the locals. Man they were impressed.
