Maco V/58 vs V/5000 omni directional antenna

Post by PONY EXPRESS »

Looking at pictures of the Maco 5/8 wave ground plane I am wondering what is the difference between the 1200 watt and 5000 watt versions
Is it just the size of the wire coming off of the matching loop or is the v/58 base loaded and the v/5000 not? If its just the wire on the loop than putting a larger wire makes it a 5000 watt version same size tubing on the matching ring area  .

Special Insulator at the base and the wire that allows more power before it arcs over to ground ??? I don't know ,
I found this on 1 web site "This antenna has a Gamma match rated at 5000 watts" Looks the same to me ...Hummmmm larger wire same results?

I will be ordering a MACO V/58 just for the fun of it and disect it's base ...........and don't plan on running more than 1000 watts on 10 meters with it .
Someone said the 5000 version was better for lightning purposes on another website ........

Its not a real radio unless it has tubes and USB/LSB on the front panel ....

I like Maco V58's. If I had to do it again, I'd probably buy one over a Imax 2000. I have played with both of the versions of the V58, and the only difference is the copper wire going from the SO239 to the actually base of the antenna. On the 5000w version, it's just a little heavier gauge wire. You can easily make the V58 handle more watts by changing that wire out, as most locals have done.

This is just what I have observed and what others have as well. Side by side, that's all we could find to be different.

And yes, I would imagine the wattage is PEP and not Bird watts, lol. North Texas Mudduck, if you're running that kind of power, then why aren't you running a beam? Just curious. If you're running 3800 Bird, then it would only take someone with a small beam and 1000w to probably key on you, and they sure as heck would have you over a long distance vs local. I know you big boys like to play on the bowl. Back in the day when I had my Moonraker, I was running around 1800w and no one on there could key on me...vs all these guys running 5kw bases and mobiles. I dunno..not knocking it, but just curious. Maybe there's neighborhood restrictions or a spouse issue? hehe
