I tried 5/8 wave @ 27.105~21.58'~and I couldn't get it to work...couldn't even cal swr's...cut it back to 8'8" swr 2:1...trimmed it to 1.3:1 so I stopped there...talked to all the regulars around here but receive wasn't the best...still curious about the polarity :? seems like it needs to vertical???

If you hang a dipole horizontally, it has horizontal polarization. If you hang it by one end, vertically, it'll have vertical polarization. If you hang it so that it's some odd angle, then it will typically have the polarization that it's 'closest' to, sort of. If you hang it so that the two legs are parallel to each other, you screwed up, it ain't gonna work well at all. I think that's about as far as I'm going with that. My 'dirty' mind would get me into sooo much trouble!

Ok I was so excited about making my own antenna and was wanting to see how it worked I was dissapointed. I went to where my truck is parked and talked to my wife on the the radio she had a hard time hearing me and she was only coming thru at about 2 on my meter on my stryker with static. Not sure if it is the radio she was using or if it was due to the antenna being horizontal. Anyone have any ideas

216 Thanks for the info and the Video I do not have a base unit set up as of yet because of the antenna situation here in town. People really get upset when you put up an antenna. It looks like I will be able to make one of these and string it up in my attic where it is not seen by the outside world.

I have a question for you or anyone else. What would happen if you were to run two radials and two ground planes on the same connector?

sorry to hijack the thread again but, what if I put a choke near the radio and near the feedpoint of the antenna?
Overkill?

If that second choke doesn't help, then it's over-kill. If it does help, then it's not over-kill. Try it and see. More than one choke doesn't hurt anything. Adds to the total length of the feed line a little bit, but that really shouldn't make any difference anyway.

I got to make one of these antenna's the other day for my brother-in-law and got the swrs down to 1.3. He did have a couple of old Bull Dog Deisle antenna's stuck on the top of a mobile home and could not tx or rx worth a darn. Put this antenna on the front of the mobile home and he was able to tx an rx about 25 miles. I talked to him for that long at least in my mobile. He is happy that he was able to benefit from this short video and it didn't cost him an arm and a leg for a big antenna. One thing though, it is pretty much directional. I am going to try this at my house hopefully this weekend and see if I can manage to make it with two sets of radials. I will post my results if it all comes together right. I know that each radial will have to be tuned seperately.

Thanks, this was a great little project and only took less than one hour to make and set up.

I think with two radials you wont be able to set swr you will be running to long of an antenna the only thing is you might be able to make the antenna thicker which may help if you want to run more power might also help recieve but let us know always trying to get my antenna better

Hey Wile E. Coyote, 654 here. Albuquerque NM. I'm glad to see your going to put up a base atenna.

The dipole thingy won't work well if it done in a horizontal position for local talking. Everyone here runs verticals mostly.

You could set it up as an inverted V with an angle more than 90 degrees. to make it work like and omni. It's still alittle directional. It will have the bigger lobes of the side of the antenna. So put the side in the direction that you do most of your talking and it will probably work just fine.

I used to have one made by Radiowavz, but I put up with less than the 90 degrees required to make Omni, and it didn't get out very far in the direction I wanted. I took it down before I really experimented with it, and put up an a99 instead.

I didn't see 216 on the forum. Ok 216 were are you.

Talk to you on the airwaves. Wile E.

654 (Frijole) out.

Hey 654,
didn't know that you were a CBRT member........... I posted the info about the noise that everyone here is getting on the radio a while back. I have found that is more when I am in town than when I am on the road. Still haven't figured out what is causing the noise. So, if you come across an answer, give me a call on the radio. You know I will be able to hear you with my mobile set-up. At times, I sure do wished that Boss Hogs would just talk on the radio like a normal person instead of locking down the channel.

Thanks for the info on the 11 meter dipole. I need to go to the cb shop and pick up some more fittings so that I can get this antenna up real soon.

I also caught in your message that 216 is a CBRT member also. Thats Great!!!!!!!! Now I know someone local on this forum.

Will give you a shout later on in the day when My wife and I go over to my father-in laws house, that is if you are on the air.
